Field Hockey Suffers Last Minute Defeat to Wilkes 3-2

(box score)

Widener was handed its second straight loss when Wilkes scored with a minute left to make the final score 3-2.

Wilkes got off to an early lead when Ashley Ream found teammate Olivia Dworak four yards out from the goal. Dworak one-timed the ball into the bottom corner to give the Colonels the 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later it was Ream's turn as she redirected a shot taken from teammate Stephanie Hahn into the left side of the net. Eleven minutes into the match the Colonels held a two goal advantage.

Widener bounced back almost immediately, scoring two minutes later on an unassisted play by senior Katie Ferguson (Glen Mills, PA). Ferguson took the penalty corner for the Pride, sophomore Ashley Aires (Bayville, NJ) received the ball and fired it towards the net where opposing goalie Alexis Reed made a diving save. The ball bounced back to junior Mackenzie Lindquist (Ocean City, NJ) who got off a shot that bounced off Reed for the second time. The ball landed a yard out from the goal where Ferguson was there to meet it and net her first goal of the season.

In the 27th minute, senior Samantha Balonis (Northumberland, PA) tied the score for Widener. Balonis carried the ball from the right side of the field into the middle, beat a defender and rocketed a shot from just inside the circle into the bottom right. The goal marked the second of the season for Balonis and sent the Pride into halftime with an even 2-2 score.

The second half was played with neither team gaining an advantage over the other. It looked as if the game was heading into overtime, when Wilkes' Ashley Hahn was blocked from taking a shot and passed the ball to her left. Aliya Frankel, the leading scorer for the Colonels, one-timed the ball off the post and into the net to secure the 3-2 win.

Widener managed 13 shots and 14 penalty corners. Wilkes had the slight advantage with 14 shots and 16 corners.

Junior goalie Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) made seven saves and freshman Dana Adamson (Warrington, PA) added two defensive saves from the center-back position
.

Widener will next travel to meet Gwynedd-Mercy at 7:00 pm on Tuesday.
