Volleyball Serves Its Way To 3-1 Victory Over Arcadia

(box score)

Widener amassed 13 aces, including 10 from freshman Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, PA), and notched its first Commonwealth Conference win of the season with a 3-1 triumph (25-17, 25-7, 15-25, 25-19) over Arcadia at Schwartz Center.

Widener in the second set made some real noise by scoring the first 11 points with Barbieri totaling five aces over the first six points. The Pride had a .500 hitting percentage in the set with the Knights, who called their second and final timeout of the set down 10-0, hitting .000.

Freshman Brooke Ruditys (Upper Chichester, PA) totaled 13 kills, nine digs and a .251 percentage for the Pride (7-3, 1-1 CC). Barbieri closed with 30 assists, fell four aces shy of the school record and junior Victoria Miller (West Chester, PA) totaled 19 digs.

"Sabrina and Brooke really did a great job in leading our offense," Widener coach Donovan Anglin said. "Sabrina is consistently improving her set selection, she is reading the defense better and she is finding the open hitter. Brooke is focused in the front row. She wants the ball and is aggressively attacking the defense. That's what we've been working on so it's great to see it come to fruition."

Widener, which continues its best start since 2009, closed with a 37-30 kills edge and a .319 percentage, including .379 in the fourth set. The school record for aces in a match is 22, set against Arcadia in 2004.

Natalie Cadmus posted 14 kills and 16 digs, Alexia Bell notched 25 assists and Veronika Bailey added 17 digs for the Knights (3-2, 1-1), who ended with a .075 percentage.

Widener hits the road Friday and Saturday at the Knights Invitational in Aston, PA.
