Field Hockey Handed First Loss of the Season, 3-1 by Eastern

(box score)

After letting up a few early goals, Widener played tough but could not erase the deficit and was defeated for the first time this season, 3-1 by Eastern.

Both teams recorded 10 shots, but it was Eastern which capitalized on the opportunities. The Eagles went up 2-0 in the first half and it proved too much for Widener to come back from.

The first goal came in the 10th minute as Jess Jaindl poked a ball into the net off a cross from teammate Danielle Frasca.

Megan Bolton, the leading defender for the Eagles, scored in the 22nd minute off of a penalty corner. Alexa Borrelli was credited with the assist.

Bolton added another goal in the 57th minute on a penalty stroke that found its way past junior goaltender Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE). Karmeris finished with six saves for the Pride.

Senior Hannah Robinson (Clarksville, MD) netted her first goal of the season in the 63rd minute. Fellow senior Brittany Gunderson (Turnersville, NJ) beat a defender on the end line and passed the ball in front of the goal where Robinson was there to direct it in and erase the shutout.

Senior defender Lindsay Donovan (Pittsgrove, NJ) led the Pride defense and made a key defensive save in the second half.

Widener returns to Edith R. Dixon Field against Wilkes on Friday at 7:00 pm.
