Women's Basketball Matches School Record For Victories With 80-71 Win at Alvernia

(box score)

Senior Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA) scored a season-best 25 points and added 11 rebounds for Widener in an 80-71 Commonwealth Conference win at Alvernia in Reading, PA.

Dellinger scored nine points in the opening half and senior Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ) added eight for Widener, which opened a 41-24 at the break.  The Pride in the half shot 35 percent (14-of-40) from the floor and hit five 3-pointers with the Crusaders shooting only 23 percent (7-of-31) from the field.

Widener's lead reached 20 early in the second half before Alvernia made things real interesting near the end of the contest.  The home team rattled off 10 straight points to close to 66-58 with 4:56 left thanks to a pair of 3-pointers from Chelsea Ebersole.

Ebersole then hit another triple with 2:26 remaining for a 70-65 contest.  But after the teams traded two points, junior Jennifer Egee (Ridley Park, PA) canned a huge 3-pointer with 1:29 left for a 75-67 Widener lead that all but iced the contest.

Dellinger shot 8-of-13 from the floor and 7-for-10 from the line in notching her team-leading eighth double-double of the season.  Hejnas closed with 16 points and eight rebounds, senior Lil Carney (Narberth, PA) added 10 and nine to go with eight assists, Egee had nine points and eight rebounds with senior Francesca Lee (Hainesport, NJ) getting eight and eight.

Egee drilled three 3-pointers to become the program's single-season leader with 58, besting the mark of 56 established by Nikki Carden in 2003-04.  Already the school's career leader, she now stands at 150.

The Pride (19-4, 14-2 CC), winners of seven straight, matched the school record for victories established in 1981-82 and equaled in 2010-11.

Ebersole scored 23 points on 8-of-18 shooting, Young netted 17 and Kayla Long added 12 for the Crusaders (8-15, 5-11 CC).

Widener on Tuesday hosts No. 10 Messiah at 6:00 pm.
