Men's Basketball Falls, 85-74, to Messiah

(box score)

Junior Rodney Brown (Lake Valley, NJ) just missed his career high by scoring 24 points, but Messiah was too much and handed Widener an 85-74 Commonwealth Conference loss at Schwartz Center.

Messiah owned a 46-36 halftime lead by shooting 71 percent (17-of-24) from the floor and an incredible 8-of-11 from 3-point range.  Zac Hoy scored 12 points in the half, Taylor Groff netted 11 and Brad Bolen added 10 for the Falcons.

Brown was the main attraction in the period with 19 points and one scintillating block off the backboard on a layup attempt from Scott Bolen in the final two minutes.  Brown shot 8-of-11 from the field in the stanza for the Pride, who hit 54 percent (14-of-26).

Widener (6-18, 5-12 CC) had everyone's attention by scoring eight straight points to close to 73-65 with 3:27 left.  Junior Bob Makor (Philadelphia, PA) and freshman David Nicholson (Bowie, MD) each netted four points in that span.

Unfortunately, the Falcons (13-10, 9-8) were just too much.  Hoy made a layup with 2:57 left to make it 75-65 and Derek Mosley added a layup with 2:28 to play for a 12-point margin that all but ended things.

Brown, who shot 9-of-14 from the field, went on a tear by falling just one point short of his career best set January 5 vs. Lycoming.  Nicholson poured in 13 points off the bench and Makor added 11 for the Pride, who shot 51 percent (27-of-53) from the floor.

Brad Bolen scored 20 points, Groff had 19, Hoy poured in 16, Mosley netted 12 and Scott Bolen added 10 for the Falcons, who shot 70 percent (32-of-46) overall and canned 10 three-pointers.

Widener closes its season Saturday against Arcadia on Senior Day, starting at 1:00 pm.
