Men's Basketball Drops Conference Opener, 92-89, to Elizabethtown

Widener made an impressive run in the second half before falling short, 92-89, to Elizabethtown in a Commonwealth Conference game on Wednesday night. 
 
Widener (5-2, 0-1 CC) went down 46-37 at halftime, but came back in the second half to pull within 90-87 with 22 seconds remaining.  Senior forward Rob McPherson (Bowie, MD) was fouled and made both shots to shrink the lead to one.  After the inbound pass, Widener was forced to foul Elizabethtown as the time clicked down.  Tommy James made both shots for the Blue Jays (4-3, 1-1) to increase the lead back to three.  Widener then drove down the court, junior Dillon Fields (Medford, NJ) threw up a desperation 3-pointer to tie the game and the shot went just wide of the mark. 
 
The Pride shot 50.8 percent from the field and 34.8 from beyond the arc. 
 
McPherson led the Pride with a career-best 31 points, shooting 10-of-19 from the field and 4-of-10 from beyond the arc.  The senior captain was a factor at both ends of the court by adding eight rebounds and one steal.
 
Fields, in his best offensive game of the season, scored 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting.  Additionally, Fields brought down four rebounds and dished out two assists. 
 
Junior forward Greg Lawson (Mount Holly, NJ) led the team with 12 rebounds and fell one point short of a double-double.  Fellow junior Mark Pryzbylkowski (New Egypt, NJ) led the team with four assists and additionally scored four points. 
 
Sophomore guard David Nicholson (Odenton, MD) came off the bench to add eight points on 3-of-5 shooting and added one rebound and an assist. 
 
Fellow sophomore Laron Byrd (Philadelphia, PA) scored 10 points, going 50 percent from beyond the arc and defensively adding three rebounds. 
 
Widener returns home on Saturday to continue conference play against Lebanon Valley at 3:00 pm.
