Men's Soccer Drops Hard-Fought 3-2 Loss to Stevenson

Boxscore (box score)

Widener scored first, but a second-half goal by Stevenson proved to be the difference in handing the visitors a 3-2 Commonwealth Conference loss in Owings Mills, MD.

Widener (5-5-2, 0-1-1 CC) struck first in the eighth minute off of a throw in from deep in the Stevenson zone. Senior midfielder Matt Montera (New City, NY) launched a ball from the sideline that traveled into the swarm of players by the Mustang goal. Multiple players made attempts for the ball, however it ended up deflecting off a Stevenson defender into the net for the own-goal as the Pride took the early lead 1-0.

In the 23rd minute, Stevenson (7-5-1, 2-0) answered with an unassisted goal from Yianna Sarioglou and again two minutes later off a goal from Steve Hamilton. Widener would go into halftime trailing 2-1.

To even the score at 2-2, Widener called on Montera again in the 53rd minute. Off a corner kick, Montera was able to deflect the ball past goalkeeper Ryan Callinan for his first goal of his career. This marks the second time in the past week that a Widener senior has scored his first goal of their career after senior Cody Schulte (White Hall, MD) scored the equalizing goal against Alvernia on Saturday.

One minute and six seconds later Stevenson's Christopher Panian scored an unassisted goal off a shot from 12 yards out to win the game for the Mustangs.

Leading the Pride was senior Matt Parrotta (Torrington, CT) with two shots on goal and sophomore Malik Krcic (Saylorsburg, PA) with three shots.

Widener took nine shots compared to Stevenson's 11, but managed eight corner kicks to the Mustangs' two.

Senior goalkeeper Jakub Valdner (Bratislava, Slovakia) made three saves for the Pride in playing all 90 minutes.

Widener is back in action at PPL Park, home of the Philadelphia Union, on Friday against Lycoming at 7:30 pm. The women open play at 5:00 pm vs. the Warriors.
