Volleyball Celebrates Seniors, Defeats Alvernia 3-0

Widener defeated Alvernia 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-9) in Commonwealth Conference play at Schwartz Center to finish the 2013 season on a positive note.

Widener (16-15, 4-5 CC) secured a winning record on the season by registering 45 kills to Alvernia's 28. The Pride also managed seven blocks to their opponent's one.

Senior middle hitter Veronica Vizzard (Havertown, PA) in her last match for the Pride recorded four kills, three digs and 2.5 blocks. Vizzard finishes the season with a team leading 91.5 blocks, along with 174 kills and 94 digs. Her blocks are good for second place in the conference and her 207 career blocks are ninth-best in school history.

Fellow senior Maggie Greenberg (Meadowbrook, PA) made a season best 37 assists, recorded three kills, and defensively added seven digs. Greenberg is a former second-team All-Conference selection and finishes fifth in school history with 1,087 assists in her career.

Senior defensive specialist Stephanie Schutt (Tucson, AZ) started the game for the Pride, but was forced to sub out due to an injury suffered in the previous match. Schutt retires with 466 digs in her four-year career.

Outsider hitters, junior Kaitlin Schnalzer (Bethlehem, PA) and freshman Brooke Ruditys (Upper Chichester, PA) finished with 12 and 11 kills respectively. Schnalzer added eight digs to her credit, as teammate Ruditys made two service aces, 10 digs and three assisted blocks in the contest. Ruditys finishes the season with a team high 296 kills, followed by Schnalzer with 270.

Junior right side Jessica Dembeck (Philadelphia, PA) registered nine kills to go with three digs and 1.5 blocks. Junior Caitlin Horan (Morristown, NJ) also managed 1.5 blocks to go along with her four kills and one assist.

Stepping into a new position, sophomore Ashley Ferrill (Reading, PA) made 13 digs and one service ace as the Pride's libero. Fellow sophomore Gina D'Allura (Broomall, PA) managed two kills with no errors on five attempts.

Widener finishes the 2013 season ranked sixth in the conference and averaged 10.46 kills and 9.40 assists per set, as well as averaging 16.48 digs and 1.78 blocks.
