Lil Carney Reaches 1,000-Point Milestone In Women’s Basketball 69-53 Victory Over Albright

(box score)
Senior Lil Carney (Narberth, PA) needed 15 points to become the 10th player in school history to join the 1,000 point club and got exactly that in Widener's 69-53 Commonwealth Conference victory over Albright at Schwartz Center.

Albright (7-10, 3-7 CC) put the first two points of the game on the scoreboard with a layup in the paint, but Widener came back quickly to gain the lead and stayed ahead for the remainder of the contest. Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA), Courtney Colella (Cinnaminson, NJ), Jennifer Egee (Ridley Park, PA), Joanna Persiano (Absecon, NJ) and Carney combined for 12 points in less than three minutes while the Pride's defense kept the Lady Lions from scoring. In the first half alone, Widener (13-4, 8-2) scored 36 to Albright's 26 points and had 23 rebounds to Albright's 19.

Leading the team in scoring, Carney shot 2-for-3 at the line, 5-of-11 in field goals and made 3-of-6 three-pointers—one of which made the crowd stand to its feet to applaud her accomplishment of reaching 1,000 career points. She also grabbed six rebounds, all defensive, and had four of each assists and steals.

Junior Joanna Persiano led the team with six assists and also totaled nine points—coming from sinking 3-of-6 three-pointers. Sophomore Ally Ferrucci (Vineland, NJ) had five assists on the day. Egee hit 5-of-12 field goals and was 1-for-1 at the line. Dellinger, who was the ninth player in school history to reach 1,000 points in December against Arcadia, scored seven points and picked up five rebounds.

On Wednesday, beginning at 6:00 pm, Widener will be hosting Lebanon Valley in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader, with the men playing afterwards at approximately 8:00 pm.
