Field Hockey Handed Tough 3-2 Loss by Gwynedd-Mercy

(boxscore)

Widener rallied late in the contest to forge a tie, only to give up a goal with just under seven minutes left in a 3-2 setback to Gwynedd-Mercy at Edith R. Dixon Field.

The Pride (1-1) struck first when freshman Meghan Garvey (Landenberg, PA) continued her strong start, tipping home a pass from junior Hannah Robinson (Clarksville, MD) in the ninth minute.  It was her second goal of the season and gave Widener a 1-0 lead.

Maria Karidas was just getting warm for the Griffins (2-1) as she scored twice in 102 seconds.  Her tying goal came from Erin Gorenflo's assist and the go-ahead tally thanks to Megan Senkeleski's helper in the 23rd minute made it 2-1.

Widener never gave up and leveled the match, 2-2, as senior Brittany Creighton (Pitman, NJ) tipped home Garvey's blast in the 56th minute.

Overtime seemed inevitable, but Karidas completed her hat trick with 6:49 left as her deflection of Sarah Jackson's pass gave Gwynedd-Mercy a 3-2 lead.

Garvey ended with two shots and sophomore Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) made six saves for the Pride.

Karidas finished her night with 12 shots and Kelly Kruk had one save for the Griffins.

Widener is home Saturday to face Stevenson, beginning at noon.
