Robinson's Hat Trick Helps Field Hockey to 6-1 Season-Opening Win at Immaculata

(box score)

Junior Hannah Robinson (Clarksville, MD) scored three goals, including two only 41 seconds apart to help Widener roll to a 6-1 season-opening victory at Immaculata.

Freshman Meghan Garvey (Landenberg, PA) put home the Pride's first goal of the season, taking a pass from senior Brittany Creighton (Pitman, NJ) and scoring in the fifth minute for a 1-0 lead.  It was part of a first half in which Widener (1-0) had an 11-5 shots edge and a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Robinson, in just her fourth career start, made a push for more thanks to her second-half heroics.  She found the back of the cage in the 46th minute and again in the 47th to give Widener a 3-0 lead.

The Mighty Macs (0-1) got one back in the 53rd minute when Natalie Rivera scored off a feed from Ashley O'Donnell for a 3-1 deficit.  But Widener restored the three-goal margin as Robinson tallied in the 58th minute for a 4-1 game.

Robinson becomes just the 17th player in school history to record a hat trick.

Senior Emily Norcross (Erial, NJ) tallied in the 65th minute and junior Brittany Gunderson (Turnersville, NJ) netted one with 34 seconds to play for the final.

Sophomore Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) needed to make just three saves for the Pride, who rolled to a 24-9 shots edge.

Mary Beth Plastek had three shots and Patsy Murphy made 11 saves for the Mighty Macs.

Widener's fourth straight victory in a season opener ties the school record established from 1991-94.  The goals are the most Widener scored since a 6-0 triumph over Arcadia on October 28, 2009.

Widener plays its home opener Thursday against Gwynedd-Mercy, beginning at 7:00 pm.
