Men's Soccer Holds On For 2-1 Victory Over Stevenson

(box score)

Freshman Zac Furia (Morton, PA) had an goal and an assist for Widener, which dominated play but had to stave off Stevenson for a 2-1 Commonwealth Conference victory at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Furia netted his first collegiate goal in the 21st minute to give Widener a 1-0 lead.  Senior Joe Brydges (Philadelphia, PA) lofted a corner kick to Furia, who picked it up on the left side and scored on a very tough angle inside the right post.

Furia's pass in the 69th minute helped give the Pride a 2-0 cushion.  He fed a great ball to freshman Tori Remondelli (Point Pleasant, NJ), who ripped one from 10 yards for his third goal of the season.

Stevenson got a fortuitous bounce in the 89th minute to halve the deficit.  Reid Hawkins fed one in the box that Christopher Panian was credited for his sixth goal of the season as he got a touch on it and the ball went in off a Widener defender.

The Pride (5-6-2, 2-1-1 CC) closed with an 11-4 shots edge, including 8-0 in the opening half, and junior Jakub Valdner (Bratislava, Slovakia) again played great with two saves.

Kenneth Hersey came up with three saves for the Mustangs (6-8, 1-3).

Widener on Saturday visits Alvernia for a 2:00 pm start.
