Volleyball Ends 1-1 after Tri-Match

(vs. Neumann) / (vs. Penn State Altoona)

Widener hosted its second Tri-Match of the year today and faced Neumann University (25-23, 19-25, 23-25, 25-21, 12-15) and Penn State Altoona (22-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-22) at Schwartz Center.

 
Against Neumann, the Pride (14-15, 4-3 CC) pushed the match to a fifth set to 15 points, but lost 3-2. Starting the day on a high-note, Widener won the first set, but the Knights fought back to win the next two sets. It seemed as though Neumann (18-8, 8-0 CSAC) had the upper hand in the fourth set, but Widener brought the score back and sent the game into a close fifth set, in which Neumann won 15-12.
 
Against Penn State Altoona (8-19, 3-4 AMCC) Widener dropped the first set before coming back to win the next three and the match.
 
Between the two matches, Angela DiMaria (Warrington, PA) slammed 31 kills and picked up 42 digs and Shauna Phillips (Dallas, PA) had 11 kills in each match. Veronica Vizzard (Havertown, PA) totaled 21 kills and also had five solo blocks and seven block assists. Freshman hitter Gina D'Allura (Broomall, PA) played in four sets and had ten kills with just two errors. Meghan Spence (Havertown, PA) and Victoria Miller (West Chester, PA) were key defensive players for the Pride with 54 and 28 digs, respectively. Setter Maggie Greenberg (Meadowbrook, PA) totaled 101 assists between the two matches and also picked up 26 digs.

Neumann and Penn State Altoona went back and forth for five sets, but Neumann came out on top (25-21, 20-25, 25-9, 22-25, 15-9).

Widener will host a Commonwealth Conference match against Albright on Tuesday, October 23 beginning at 7:00 pm.
