Field Hockey Seniors Have Their Day In 8-0 Shutout Against Hood

(boxscore)
Widener celebrated its four seniors -- Emily Norcross (Erial, NJ), Brittany Creighton (Pitman, NJ), Nicole Nardone (Garwood, NJ) and Olivia Burgese (Collegeville, PA) -- on its last weekend home game and they combined for four goals and three assists in an 8-0 Commonwealth Conference shutout over Hood at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Freshman Meghan Garvey (Landenberg, PA) scored her 12th goal of the season eight minutes into the first half to get the ball rolling on the Pride's scoring run after she received a pass from captain senior Creighton. Just two minutes later, Norcross received a feed from junior Brittany Gunderson (Turnersville, NJ) and put it past goalkeeper Ying Van Schaik for her third of the season. To give Widener (4-9, 2-3 CC) a little more breathing room before breaking for halftime, co-captains Nardone and Burgese connected for a third Pride goal to mark Nardone's fifth goal of the season and Burgese's third assist.

Widener did not stop there as it scored five more goals in the second half. Garvey scored another goal, with the assist going to Samantha Balonis (Northumberland, PA), to get the second half scoring started at 44 minutes. Just about two minutes later, Burgese found Balonis who put the ball in the net for her second goal of the season.

The Pride's defense was solid as Hood (2-10, 0-5) only was able to get its first shot in just under the 48-minute marker.

Gunderson marked her second assist with a feed to junior Devon Biglin (Ocean City, NJ) at the 52nd minute and Creighton joined the scoring with an unassisted goal just under the 55th minute. Burgese blasted her first goal of the season in on a penalty corner play for the eighth and final Pride goal.

Garvey and Biglin put up six shots apiece, Nardone took five and Creighton and Burgese each took four. The Pride outshot the Blazers 32-4 and doubled the amount of penalty corners with 16.

Goalkeepers Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) and Jessica Sochocky (Hammonton, NJ) split the game evenly in the net. Karmeris did not face any shots and Sochocky made two saves to maintain the shutout.

For Hood, Van Schaik saw 52 minutes and made eight saves with six goals allowed. Liz Decembrino finished the remaining 18 minutes, making six saves and allowing two goals.

Widener will travel to take on Albright in another Commonwealth Conference game on Tuesday beginning at 7:00 pm.
