Men's Basketball Falls Victim to Messiah's Free Throw Shooting in 73-62 Loss

(box score)

Widener held Messiah without a basket in the final 4:25, but it was done in by the home team's foul shooting during that stretch in a 73-62 Commonwealth Conference setback in Grantham, PA.

Jeremiah Runkle made a layup with 4:25 remaining to give Messiah a 61-57 lead.  While the Pride's defense was able to prevent baskets, they were unable to stop the Falcons from getting to the foul line.  Messiah went 12-for-14 from the stripe the rest of the way with Brad Bolen and Zach Foy each going 4-for-4.

The Falcons (9-5, 3-1 CC) overall shot 23-for-29 from the line to only 16-for-20 for the Pride.  Widener could not get it going on offense, shooting 36 percent (20-of-56) and finishing with 24 points fewer than its season average.

Sophomore Bob Makor (Philadelphia, PA) had 14 points and eight rebounds to match his season highs with senior Brian Smith (Baltimore, MD) also pouring in 14 points for the Pride (10-5, 1-3).  Junior Lamar Jackson (Philadelphia, PA) scored 13 points and senior Perry Wright (Severn, MD) added 11.

Runkle had 17 points and 12 rebounds with Derek Mosley getting 14 and 11 for the Falcons, who shot 43 percent (24-of-56) from the floor.  David Fernandez poured in 16 points and Bolen contributed 10.

Widener on Wednesday hosts Arcadia at 8:00 pm.
