Volleyball Defeats Ursinus 3-1

(boxscore)

Widener took three out of the four sets (25-20, 25-22, 24-26, 25-14) played in tonight's match against Ursinus.

The Pride (2-2) came out looking for a win in the first set, and they got it. Senior Nicole Merton (Media, Pa), juniors Angela DiMaria (Warrington, Pa) and Shauna Phillips (Dallas, Pa), and freshman Kaitlyn Schnalzer (Allentown, Pa) each had two kills apiece to help Widener get a leg up on its opponent.

The second set gave Widener its second set win of the night, as the Pride held the lead throughout the entire set. Merton added three to her kill streak of the night and Freshman Brittany Johnsen (Happy Valley, Or) added three of her own. Senior Alectra Edison (Lancaster, Ca) and Sophomore Veronica Vizzard (Havertown, Pa) had a block to end the set.

The third set was most certainly the closest of the four. Ursinus took an early lead, but a strong block by Phillips and Senior Brieann Katzianer (Warrington, Pa) seemed to give the Pride the spark they needed as they eventually tied the game. Phillips also added three kills and Freshman Jessica Dembeck (Philadelphia, Pa) came into the game with two kills of her own.

For the fourth and final set of the night, the Pride clinched a 25-14 set. Merton had two more kills, Edison added three, DiMaria slammed four, including the match winning kill, and Schnalzer notched five more.

Sophomore setter Maggie Greenberg (Meadowbrook, Pa) amassed 30 assists on the night, as well as adding three of her own kills. Libero Meghan Spence (Havertown, Pa) got down and helped the offense get going with 22 digs.

Ursinus fell to 4-2.

Widener takes on Arcadia on September 14, 2011 for their next home match at 7:00pm.
