Field Hockey Takes Neumann In Shootout 3-2

(boxscore)

It took until the seventh round of a shootout before senior Kate Fay (West Chester, PA) netted her second tally of the session for a dramatic 3-2 victory in strokes that gave Widener a 3-2 win over Neumann in Aston, PA.

Just a little more than eight minutes into the game, Sophomore Devon Biglin (Ocean City, NJ) scored the first goal and started the game off in the right direction for Widener (2-0). Almost immediately after, Neumann's Melissa Hood scored a goal to even up the game. After Neumann took the lead at the 30-minute mark, Junior Emily Norcross (Erial, NJ) answered with a goal of her own just under the 50-minute mark.

With the game all tied, the game went into penalty strokes. After a best-of-five contest, the score was even with both teams getting two past the opposing goalkeeper. The match went into sudden death, where Fay blasted one past Neumann goalkeeper Maggie Carpenter in the second round of extra strokes. Neumann had its chance to settle the score once again, but freshman goalkeeper, Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) kept her goal sealed tight by stopping Chelsa O'Donnelly for the win.

Karmeris finished with five saves and Carpenter had 20 for the Knights (0-2).

It was Widener's first game to go to penalty strokes since a 4-3 triumph over Susquehanna on September 12, 1998 that included a 2-1 triumph in strokes.

Widener goes to Swarthmore on Saturday, September 10 at noon in the annual "320 Challenge."
