Volleyball Takes 3-1 Loss To Swarthmore

Widener battled through four sets against Swarthmore, but was handed a 3-1 loss (14-25, 25-23, 19-25, 19-25) in one of the matches that go towards the annual "320 Challenge."
 
The Pride (1-2) fell short of a first set win 14-25. Widener started out the set by receiving the first point, but by the first timeout of the game, was down 8-3. Nicole Merton (Media, Pa), Alectra Edison (Lancaster, Ca) and Angela DiMaria (Warrington, Pa) gave Widener their only four kills of the set.
 
The second set gave Widener hope as they won a back and forth struggle 25-23. Merton's kill gave the Pride their first point of the set. Freshman Kaitlyn Schnalzer (Allentown, Pa) had a kill late in the game to tie it up. Sophomore Veronica Vizzard (Havertown, Pa) shut down the opposing hitter with a block for the win.
 
In the third set, the Pride took a 19-25 loss to the Garnet (4-1). Merton delivered two kills. Freshman Brittany Johnsen (Happy Valley, Or) entered the game and smacked two kills.
 
For the fourth and final set of the night, the Pride loss a close 19-25 set. Junior Angela DiMaria was a big player for Widener's offense as she sent four kills to the floor. Shauna Phillips (Dallas, Pa) also had one kill in the fourth set.
 
Setter Jamie Ballew (Media, Pa) had 15 assists in tonight's match. Libero Meghan Spence (Havertown, Pa) played tight defense with 30 digs from the backline.
 
Widener takes on Ursinus on September 8 for its next home game at 7:00pm.
