Volleyball Falls, 3-2, to Messiah

(box score)

Despite getting three double-doubles, Widener was on the wrong end of a 3-2 (18-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-19, 11-15) Commonwealth Conference match against Messiah at Schwartz Center.

Widener (8-6, 1-1 CC) in the fifth set held a 7-5 lead thanks to a great kill from sophomore Veronica Vizzard (Havertown, PA).  Freshman Kaitlyn Schnalzer (Allentown, PA) had three kills in the set for the Pride to this point.

But the set belonged to Messiah's Lindsay King, who turned all four of her swings in the frame into kills.  She had three early in the set and one during a match-ending run in which the Falcons (10-2, 2-0) outscored the Pride, 10-4.

Senior Jamie Ballew (Media, PA) had 44 assists and 19 digs, Schnalzer got 17 kills and 16 digs with junior Angela DiMaria (Warrington, PA) adding 10 and 19 for Widener.  Junior Meghan Spence (Havertown, PA) notched 40 digs, senior Nicole Merton (Media, PA) pounded 10 kills and freshman Victoria Miller (West Chester, PA) contributed 10 digs.

Jessica Geib dished 37 assists to go with 18 digs, King had 17 kills and a .359 hitting percentage with Lauren Rees adding 14 kills and 15 digs for the Falcons.  Megan Wise posted 24 digs, Barbara Fretz had 17 and Allison Hill recorded 14.

Widener is off until next Tuesday, when it visits Albright for a 7:00 pm match in Reading, PA.
