Field Hockey Dealt Heartbreaking 3-2 Loss by Eastern

(box score)

Despite holding a one-goal lead with under 10 minutes remaining, Widener gave up the last two tallies and was handed its first loss of the year with a 3-2 setback to Eastern at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Eastern (2-2) opened the scoring in the 38th minute when Jess Jaindl scored off a deflection from Yvonne Herbster's pass.  Widener (3-1) evened things in the 44th minute as senior Colleen Cormier (Westampton, NJ) took a great pass from junior Olivia Burgese (Collegeville, PA) and buried her third goal of the year.

The Pride took a 2-1 lead in the 50th minute.  Senior Kate Fay (West Chester, PA) fired a shot toward net that sophomore Devon Biglin (Ocean City, NJ) re-directed home for her third tally of the season.

However, the Eagles got the equalizer in the 61st minute when Brittany Moyer scored off an assist from Kelby Bolton for a 2-2 contest.  Abby Wagner provided the decider by tallying with 2:31 left off a pass from Herbster.

Herbster had eight shots and Moyer added six to give Eastern a 25-4 edge.

Freshman Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE), the two-time reigning Commonwealth Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, made eight saves that included a penalty stroke by Herbster.

Senior Lauren Gehringer (Boyertown, PA) had three defensive saves with Burgese and junior Nicole Nardone (Garwood, NJ) getting two apiece.

Widener is home Saturday against Wilkes, beginning at noon.
