Widener built a double-digit lead in the first half, but saw its five-game winning streak snapped with a 74-72 loss to Montclair State at the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, FL.
The Pride (7-4), who led by 12 in the first half, held a 46-41 halftime lead by going 20-for-23 from the foul line and holding the Redhawks (7-4) to just 37 percent shooting (11-of-30) from the field.
Both teams in the second half went cold from the floor and it was free throw shooting that decided things. Montclair State shot 18-for-24 from the stripe in the half compared to 6-for-9 for Widener. The Redhawks overall went 36-for-46 from the stripe and the Pride ended at 26-for-32.
Junior Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA) had 16 points and nine rebounds with sophomore Jennifer Egee (Ridley Park, PA) adding 15 points and three 3-pointers for Widener. Sophomore Joanna Persiano (Absecon, NJ) and senior Lindsay Pepino (Oceanside, NY) scored eight points apiece with junior Lil Carney (Narberth, PA) adding seven and eight rebounds.
Jaime Ericson had 21 points and 10 rebounds for Montclair State, going 10-for-12 from the line. Taylor Jeffers scored 18 points off the bench and Melissa Tobie added 16.
Widener is off until Thursday, January 5, when it hosts Cabrini at 7:00 pm.
