Men's Basketball Rolls to 82-56 Triumph Over Swarthmore in Season Opener

Senior Perry Wright (Severn, MD) scored 11 of his team-high 19 points in the first half when Widener opened a 24-point halftime lead en route to an 82-56 rout of Swarthmore at Schwartz Center.

Wright shot 5-of-9 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds in the opening half as Widener (1-0) opened a 45-21 lead. The Pride shot 42 percent (18-of-43) from the field in the half, owned a 28-10 edge in points in the paint and held the Garnet to just 26 percent (7-of-27) shooting.

Brian Smith (Baltimore, MD) scored 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting with three 3-pointers, fellow senior Jack Brennan (Stratford, NJ) netted 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting and Wright ended 8-of-13 from the floor.

Will Gates netted 24 points and Jay Kober added 10 for the Garnet (0-1), who shot 35 percent (19-of-55) from the field and a mere 2-of-9 from beyond the arc.

The Pride on Friday host Penn State Mont Alto at 6:00 pm as part of the Widener Tip-Off Tournament. The second game at 8:00 pm features Delaware Valley battling SUNY Cortland.
