Men’s Soccer Falls, 1-0, to Lycoming

(box score)

Widener played tough at PPL Park for the second straight year, but came up short in a 1-0 Commonwealth Conference loss to Lycoming.

Widener (3-7-2, 0-2 CC) had the first great chance in the 56th minute when senior Gareth Cooper (Royersford, PA) had a penalty kick after sophomore Matt Parrotta (Torrington, CT) was taken down in the box.  But Connor Keenan was up to the task, diving to his left to stop Cooper and keep the game scoreless.

The Pride had another great opportunity in the 75th minute when sophomore Anthony Pezzotti (Newtown Square, PA) put a header toward the net that just grazed off the crossbar.

But it was Lycoming (7-5-1, 1-1) which came through on its chance.  Matt Snively worked his way past a defender and put a great 25-yard shot inside in the left post in the 81st minute, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Senior Dan Lorenzet (Forest Hill, MD) had five shots for Widener, which ended with an 11-9 advantage.  Sophomore Dan Price (Norristown, PA) made three saves.

Randon Wilston attempted four shots and Keenan had three saves for Lycoming.

The game served as a tremendous opportunity for Widener University, which entered a partnership as the official university of the Philadelphia Union, PPL Park and the Union's youth soccer partner partners, EPYSA and DYSA. The multi-tiered partnership that includes signage, television and web advertising spots not only aims to promote the growth of youth soccer in Chester but also to increase awareness of Widener University and its undergraduate and graduate academic programs.

PPL Park features a picturesque view of the Commodore Barry Bridge as well as the Delaware River. An average of over 17,000 fans have seen the Union compete at the stadium the last two years.

Widener returns to Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium on Tuesday against Arcadia, beginning at 7:00 pm.
