Men's Soccer Loses 1-0 Overtime Heartbreaker to Alvernia

(box score)

Widener had its chances, but gave up a goal in the 100th minute for a tough 1-0 Commonwealth Conference overtime loss to Alvernia at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

The Crusaders (12-2-1, 5-0 CC) had a great opportunity in the 84th minute when Kyle Mellon was sent in on a breakaway.  But senior Ryan Frantz (Marlton, NJ) was there to make the save and keep the match level.

Alvernia did find the back of the net 9:44 into overtime.  Josh Fretz had his initial shot hit the crossbar, but David McEwen was there on a great goal in traffic for his team-leading seventh tally of the year.

Domenic Montone and Nick Fore had three shots apiece and Ben Diller came up with two saves for the Crusaders, who finished with a 17-13 shots edge.

Frantz ended with six saves for the Pride (3-10-2, 0-5), who had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Widener is home Saturday against Lebanon Valley as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The women's game starts at 6:00 pm and the men begin at 8:00 pm.
