Field Hockey Drops 5-0 Contest at No. 9 Messiah

Widener ran into a formidable opponent in ninth-ranked Messiah and was handed a 5-0 Commonwealth Conference loss in Grantham, PA.
 
Messiah (9-3, 3-0 CC) took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when Brooke Sands scored off an assist from Juliana Hershey.  Then, it was Hershey's turn to shine as she scored twice in less than two minutes to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead with 6:54 left in the opening half.
 
Hershey completed her hat trick in the 51st minute and Emily Hursh scored in the 59th minute.
 
Junior Nicole Nardone (Garwood, NJ) and freshman Brittany Gunderson (Turnersville, NJ) each took a shot and freshman Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) made seven saves over 60 minutes for the Pride (6-6, 1-2).
 
Widener is home Wednesday against Arcadia, beginning at 4:00 pm.
