Widener took a second-half lead after trailing by 18, only to suffer a 67-54 loss to Misericordia at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in York, PA.
Down 29-11 with 4:55 left in the opening half, Widener (6-5) grabbed a 38-36 cushion with 16:25 left in the game thanks to an old-fashioned three-point play from senior Jarrell Nelson (Waldorf, MD).
But the Cougars (6-5) used a 15-3 run to open a 51-41 lead with 8:58 left. Robbie Johnson netted five points in that spurt.
Nelson and junior Perry Wright (Severn, MD) finished with nine points apiece, BJ Smith (Baltimore, MD) had eight and eight rebounds with fellow junior Jack Brennan (Stratford, NJ) adding seven and eight. The Pride shot only 35 percent (18-of-52) from the field and 5-of-18 from 3-point range.
Jeff Slanovec scored 21 points, Johnson poured in 15 with Steve Artzerovnian adding 10 and 13 rebounds for Misericordia, which shot 46 percent (23-of-50) from the floor.
Widener on Monday battles Central Penn in the consolation game, beginning at 4:00 pm.
