Men's Soccer Rolls, 4-0, Over Gwynedd-Mercy

Junior Brad Ziegler (Medford, NJ) had a goal and an assist for Widener, which scored three first-half goals in a seven-minute span for a 4-0 victory over Gwynedd-Mercy at the Garnet Alumni Classic.
 
The Pride opened the scoring in the 28th minute. Zieglerfed a great through ball to the left side where junior Dan Lorenzet (Forest Hill, MD) buried it inside the left post.
 
Widener struck again less than five minutes later for a 2-0 lead. Sophomore DJ DiPaola (Havertown, PA) ripped a shot that was saved by goalkeeper Mike Leonard, but freshman Anthony Pezzotti (Newtown Square, PA) fired home the rebound.
 
Pezzotti helped bring the Pride their third goal as he was taken down in the box for a penalty kick in the 35th minute. Sophomore Drew Hilinski (Perkasie, PA) converted the attempt for a 3-0 margin.
 
Ziegler found the back of the net in the 71st minute for Widener, which owned an 18-3 shots edge that included 10-2 in the second half.
 
Freshman Jakub Valdner (Bratislava, Slovakia) did not have to make any saves for the Pride, who are 3-0 for the first time since 2007.
 
Leonard has six saves for the Griffins (0-2-1).

Four players for Widener were honored on the all-tournament team including Ziegler, who ended the weekend with two goals and an assist over two games.  DiPaola, senior Colin Koch (Perkasie, PA) and sophomore Kevin Martin (Havertown, PA) also were cited.
 
Widener on Wednesday plays its home opener against No. 17 Swarthmore, beginning at 7:00 pm.
