Women's Basketball Explodes in Second Half For 70-61 Win at Albright

(box score)

Freshman Lil Carney (Narberth, PA) and sophomore Casey Pritz (Abington, PA) scored 18 points apiece for Widener, which won for the fourth time in six games with a 70-61 Commonwealth Conference triumph at Albright in Reading, PA.

The Pride (10-10, 6-3 CC) ran away and hid by opening the second half on an 18-4 run in just over six minutes, turning a seven-point halftime deficit into a 44-37 cushion.  Senior Lindsey Isler (New Hope, PA) scored six points in the burst and freshman Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA) wrapped it on a three-point play.

Carney, who scored a career-best 26 points in the teams' first meeting January 13, scored 13 points in the second half and Isler added 10.  This helped Widener outscore Albright 44-28 in the second half by shooting 50 percent (15-of-30) from the floor.

Isler's defense also played a big role as the Lady Lions (6-13, 2-7) shot just 26 percent (5-of-19) after intermission and 33 percent (17-of-52) overall.

Pritz, who hit 7-of-8 from the floor, hauled in 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season and 13th career to help Widener own a 52-37 edge on the boards.  Isler finished with 12 points and senior Becky Tyler (Wynnewood, PA) had nine rebounds.

Mallory Olsheski scored 14 points, Kari Ludy had 10 and MariLynn McMonagle contributed 10 rebounds for Albright.

It is Widener's first season sweep of Albright since the 2004-05 season.

Widener returns home Saturday against Lebanon Valley at 1:00 pm.  The Pride will wear pink uniforms as part of the WBCA “Pink Zone” to raise awareness about breast cancer and all fans are asked to wear pink.
