Kate Fay's Goal Lifts Field Hockey to 4-3 Victory at Albright

(box score)

Junior Kate Fay (West Chester, PA) scored the deciding goal with 1:37 remaining, one of many heroics for Widener in a 4-3 Commonwealth Conference victory at Albright in Reading, PA.

Off a penalty corner, senior Megan Scarpinato (Sewell, NJ) blasted a shot that Fay put inside the cage for her third goal of the season and second career game-winner.

It capped a day in which junior Colleen Cormier (Westampton, NJ) scored twice for her second multi-goal contest this season and fourth career. Her tally in the 22nd minute gave Widener a 2-1 lead and she scored again in the 30th minute for a 3-2 margin, giving her a team-high seven goals this season.

Freshman Samantha Balonis (Northumberland, PA) also tallied with Scarpinato getting two assists for Widener (7-2, 1-1 CC), which ended with a 16-10 shots advantage and a 19-4 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore Nicole Nardone (Garwood, NJ) and freshman Katie Ferguson (Glen Mills, PA) each had an assist for the Pride.

The excitement was not limited to the offense. Senior Megan Purcell (Perkasie, PA) made five saves, but none was bigger than when she stoned Gia Boscola on a penalty stroke with 17:24 left and Widener holding on to a 3-2 lead.

Boscola scored twice with Katie Feldman getting a goal and two assists for the Lady Lions (6-5, 1-2). Marguerite DeLucas had eight saves for Albright.

Widener on Tuesday visits Cabrini for a 4:00 pm start in Radnor, PA.
