Field Hockey Falls to No. 2 Lebanon Valley

(box score)

Widener gave its all against a very talented squad in second-ranked Lebanon Valley, but was dealt a 7-1 Commonwealth Conference loss at Edith R. Dixon Field.

The Pride more than held their own early, halting the Dutchmen on several occasions. The game remained scoreless into the 28th minute, when Marisa Maxwell opened the scoring for Lebanon Valley (17-1, 6-1 CC) with the first of her two goals.

Caitlin Vasey and Jocelyn Novak tallied just two minutes apart late in the opening half to give the Dutchmen a 3-0 lead.

Widener (10-5, 3-4) got one back in the 44th minute. Junior Colleen Cormier (Westampton, NJ) took a pass from freshman Samantha Balonis (Northumberland, PA) and fired home her 14th goal of the year for a 3-1 deficit.

Shelly Lobach, Cait Eckenrode, Maxwell and Allison Bicher tallied after that for Lebanon Valley, which posted a 29-8 shots edge. Christine Poletti made two saves.

Megan Purcell (Perkasie, PA) made 10 saves in her final game and fellow senior Megan Scarpinato (Sewell, NJ) took four shots for the Pride.

The contest ended another standout year for the Pride, who notched double figures in wins for the seventh time in the last eight seasons and eighth overall under 11th year head coach Larissa Gillespie.
