Volleyball Secures Conference Tournament Berth Despite 3-1 Loss at Messiah

Widener was dealt a 3-1 (16-25, 21-25, 28-26, 13-25) Commonwealth Conference loss at Messiah in Grantham, PA, but still clinched its fourth straight trip to the league tournament.
 
Widener (16-11, 4-2 CC) forced Messiah to commit 11 errors in taking the third set. But the Falcons (15-6, 4-2) rolled to a .417 hitting percentage in the fourth set, holding the Pride to only .192.
 
Angela DiMaria (Warrington, PA) had 10 kills and 10 digs with fellow sophomore Meghan Spence (Havertown, PA) recording 17 digs for Widener. Junior Jamie Ballew (Media, PA) dished 31 assists, Stephanie Schutt (Tucson, AZ) notched 10 digs and fellow freshman Heather Long (Ephrata, PA) added eight kills.
 
Lauren Rees had 17 kills and 18 digs, Lindsay King recorded 21 kills with Jessica Geib adding 49 assists and 14 digs for Messiah. Megan Wise contributed 19 kills.
 
Widener is tied for third place in the conference with Messiah and one game behind Elizabethtown for second. The Pride clinched the berth with losses by Albright to Elizabethtown and Alvernia to Lebanon Valley.
 
Widener on Thursday hosts Rowan at 7:00 pm.
