No. 21 Women's Soccer Falls, 7-0, at Top-Ranked Messiah

No. 21 Widener gave its best, but ran into a formidable opponent in top-ranked Messiah and was dealt a 7-0 Commonwealth Conference defeat in Grantham, PA.
 
Messiah opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Jessica Shirk played the ball across to Corinne Wulf, who put it away from eight yards out for a 1-0 lead. Wulf, who totaled five points, made it 2-0 Messiah just over six minutes later on a one-timer from Alex Brandt, who finished with a goal and two assists. Messiah, which made it 3-0 before halftime, outshot Widener 10-0 in the period and earned a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
 
The Falcons (13-0, 3-0 CC) maintained control of the game in the second half, tallying three times in a span of less than seven minutes that included two from Amanda Naeher.  Rachel Scheibeler capped the scoring in the 82nd minute, following an assist from Emily Schneider.
 
Naeher took seven shots for Messiah, which ended with a 31-2 shots edge.
 
Sophomores Devan Doyle (Woodbury Heights, NJ) and Patty Squicciarini (Lansdale, PA) each had one shot for the Pride (10-3-1, 1-2-1).  Freshman Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ) made five saves in just over 58 minutes.
 
Widener on Tuesday hosts Elizabethtown for a Commonwealth Conference match, beginning at 4:00 pm.
