Men's Soccer Handed 5-0 Loss at Third-Ranked Messiah

(box score)

Widener gave a spirited effort that saw it down just one goal at halftime, but could not overcome a second-half barrage in a 5-0 Commonwealth Conference loss at No. 3 Messiah in Grantham, PA.

The Falcons (12-1, 3-0 CC) scored their only first-half tally in the 16th minute, when Geoff Pezon netted a header thanks to assists from Danny Thompson and Derek Black.

Junior Ryan Frantz (Marlton, NJ) made things hold in the period with four saves to keep the game close.

But the floodgates opened in the second half, beginning with Danny Thompson making it 2-0 to Messiah in the 61st minute. Sheldon Myer, Dan Squire and Nick Thompson also found the back of the net for the Falcons.

Sophomore Drew Hilinski (Perkasie, PA) took two shots and Frantz ended with six saves for the Pride (4-9-2, 0-3-1).

Widener on Wednesday hosts Elizabethtown, beginning at 7:00 pm.
