Sophomore Brittany Balentine (Medford, NJ) scored in the 12th minute for Widener, which kept its undefeated record intact with a 1-0 triumph over William Paterson at the Cabrini Soccer Festival in Radnor. PA.
Balentine took a loose ball in front and buried it past goalkeeper Meaghan Baker for her first goal of the season and eighth career for the Pride (3-0).
The defense made it hold, yielding the Pioneers (1-2) to just two shots each half. Senior Alee Gunter (Maple Shade, NJ) and freshman Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ) each played 45 minutes in net, closing with two saves apiece.
Baker made three saves for William Paterson.
Widener is off its first 3-0 start since 2005 and is unbeaten in its first three games since opening the 2007 season 5-0-1.
Widener is off until Friday, when it faces Buffalo State at the Franklin & Marshall Tournament. Game time is 5:00 pm.
