Widener fought tooth and nail with No. 20 Swarthmore, only to give up a goal 86 seconds into overtime for a tough 1-0 setback and its first loss of the season at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
Widener (7-1-1) had several great chances among its seven shots. Casey LeRoy (Washington Twp., NJ) hit the crossbar on a header in the first half and fellow senior Sam Baer (Lancaster, PA) saw her 25-yard free kick in the second half just go over the goal.
Swarthmore (7-1) capitalized on its 12th shot of the match. Kirsten Peterson fed a ball on the left side to Elizabeth Mills, who buried a 10-yard shot inside the top left corner of the goal.
Senior Alee Gunter (Maple Shade, NJ) and freshman Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ) made four saves apiece for Widener.
Megan Colombo took five shots for the Garnet, who leveled the “320 Challenge” against the Pride at 2-2.
Widener, which was off to its best start in school history before tonight, now matches its finest beginning from 1995 and 2002.
Widener on Wednesday hosts FDU-Florham at 4:00 pm as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. The men battle Cabrini at 7:00 pm.
