Volleyball Stuns Previously Unbeaten Lebanon Valley

(boxscore)

Widener used the combination of timely kills and gutty play to rally for a 3-1 Commonwealth Conference victory (17-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-23) over reigning league champion Lebanon Valley at Schwartz Center.

The Pride (10-5, 1-1 CC) were down 20-16 in the fourth set before ending the match on a 9-3 run.  Senior Devan Green (Monroe Center, IL) had five kills and no errors in the fourth set, with junior Nicole Merton (Media, PA) and freshman Angela DiMaria (Warrington, PA) notching three kills apiece.

Green again played solidly with 14 kills and only one error over 33 attacks for a .394 hitting percentage.  This helped Widener snap an 11-match skid against Lebanon Valley (10-1, 1-1) and post its first such victory since September 14, 1999.

Merton ended with 11 kills and one error over 22 attacks for an impressive .455 percentage.  Senior Danielle Wetling (Upper Darby, PA) and DiMaria notched 11 kills apiece.

Sophomore Jamie Ballew (Media, PA) again helped dictate the offense with 45 assists.  Freshman Meghan Spence (Havertown, PA) notched 22 digs with senior Duong Lau (Upper Darby, PA) and freshman Chelsea Hoeffler (Cranford, NJ) posting 14 apiece.

The Pride's third straight win and seventh in the last nine matches gives sixth-year head coach Donovan Anglin 99 career victories.

Widener on Thursday hosts Ursinus at 7:00 pm.
