Brennan's Career-High 22 Points Helps Men's Basketball to 75-69 Win at Gwynedd-Mercy

Sophomore Jack Brennan (Stratford, NJ) scored a career-best 22 points for Widener, which won for the fourth time in five games with a 75-69 victory at Gwynedd-Mercy in Gwynedd Valley, PA.

 

Brennan poured in 14 points in the opening half on 7-of-11 shooting for Widener (7-2), which opened a 40-30 lead.  The Pride shot 46 percent (18-of-39) from the field in that stretch and had a 25-15 rebounding advantage.

 

Widener, which led by as many as 55-39 midway through the second half, saw Gwynedd-Mercy moved to 64-55 on Jon Crabtree's layup with 5:08 remaining.  But junior Jarrell Nelson (Waldorf, MD) made a free throw with 4:45 left for a 65-55 game and Brennan added a tip-in one minute later for a 12-point contest.

 

Brennan shot 10-of-17 from the floor for the Pride, who converted 44 percent (28-of-63) overall.

 

Senior Bobby Edmunds (Linwood, NJ) had 11 points and seven rebounds with junior Chris McDevitt (Doylestown, PA) adding 10 points for Widener.

 

Jon Hogga ended with 26 points and nine rebounds for the Griffins (3-3), who shot only 39 percent (25-of-64) from the field.  Matt Johnson netted 11 points and Brandon Williams added 10 and eight rebounds.

 

It was Widener's first of four consecutive games against NCAA Tournament teams from last season.  The Griffins won the Colonial States Athletic Conference and the Pride captured a third straight Commonwealth Conference title.

 

Widener on Saturday visits Gettysburg for a 2:00 pm start.
