Senior Bobby Edmunds (Linwood, NJ) scored 14 points to lead four players in double figures for Widener, which nearly erased a 17-point deficit in a 79-71 loss at Gettysburg.
The Bullets (3-4) used a 15-3 run to open a 26-13 lead with 7:02 left in the first half. Alex Zurn and Larry Geedey each netted five points in that span.
Widener (7-3), which was down 62-45 with 10:03 remaining, got back into the contest. Trailing 72-59 with 3:57 left, the Pride went on a 12-2 spurt for a 74-71 game with 35 seconds remaining. Junior Chris McDevitt (Doylestown, PA) scored four points in that run as did senior Jamarr Johnson (Pittsgrove, NJ), who ended it with a layup.
But Gettysburg quickly sealed things right after that basket. Andrew Powers took a feed from Kevin Kennedy on a fast-break layup with 32 seconds to play for a 76-71 contest. McDevitt missed a 3-pointer and the Bullets got the rebound to end it.
Edmunds shot 5-of-12 from the field, but it could not offset Widener making just 37 percent (24-of-66) overall. Johnson grabbed nine rebounds as he, McDevitt and sophomore Onyi Ezeala (Piscataway, NJ) poured in 12 points apiece.
Powers netted 29 points on 10-of-13 shooting and hit 9-for-11 from the line, helping Gettysburg convert 56 percent (31-of-55) from the floor. Zurn scored 21 points and Kennedy added 10.
Widener is off until January 3, when it faces Carnegie Mellon at the Casa Mia Holiday Tournament in Center Valley, PA. Tip-off is 6:00 pm.
