Volleyball Handed 3-2 Loss by Gallaudet at ECAC South Tournament

Third-seeded Widener could not overcome dropping the fourth set to No. 2 seed Gallaudet and suffered a 3-2 loss (19-25, 25-20, 29-27, 22-25, 9-15) in the ECAC South Tournament Semifinals in Center Valley, PA.

 

Widener (22-16) posted 12 kills in the third set, overcoming a 16-13 deficit and getting a set-ending ace from senior Devan Green (Monroe Center, IL) for the lead.  But the Pride fell into an early 10-2 hole in the fourth set, allowing 15 kills from the Bison for an even match.

 

Gallaudet (26-14) never trailed in the fifth set, getting 10 kills to just two for Widener.

 

Sophomore Jamie Ballew (Media, PA), just named first team All-Commonwealth Conference, had 42 assists and 17 digs for her seventh double-double of the year.  Senior Danielle Wetling (Upper Darby, PA), picked second team all-league, had 10 kills and 11 digs for her third double-double of the season.

 

Freshman Meghan Spence (Havertown, PA) notched a season-best 38 digs, junior Erin Gravelle (Media, PA) had 10 and sophomore Alectra Edison (Lancaster, CA) recorded 12 kills.

 

Justine Jeter ended with 29 kills and 14 digs, Amanda Krieger posted 12 and 20, Ann Whited recorded 10 and 13 with Paige Johnson dishing 53 assists for Gallaudet.

 

Widener got here with Wednesday's 3-1 home victory over Swarthmore in the quarterfinals.

 

Widener was making its second postseason appearance in school history after also advancing to the semifinals of last year's ECAC South Tournament.  The Pride upended City College of New York at home in the quarterfinals before falling to Penn State Behrend.
