Men's Soccer Dealt 3-1 Defeat by No. 1 Messiah

(boxscore)

Junior Justin Hovaker (Pasadena, MD) scored early in the second half for Widener to cut its deficit in half, but Messiah proved to be too much for the Pride in a 3-1 Commonwealth Conference result at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Hovaker rebounded the initial shot from sophomore Brad Ziegler (Medford, NJ) and touched it past goalkeeper Jared Clugston to make it a 2-1 contest less than two minutes into the second half.

Mark Jeschke assisted Joshua Wood who scored the game's first goal for Messiah in the 40th minute.  Sam Woodworth scored with less than a minute left in the first half to make it 2-0.  Geoff Pezon assisted Danny Thompson in the 88th minute to seal the victory.

The Pride (4-6-2, 1-1 CC) gave Messiah all they could handle for 39 minutes, holding a 3-2 shot advantage until the Falcons (10-1, 1-0) broke the scoreless tie.  Senior Hamed Correa (Cali, Colombia) saved three shots for Widener, including a diving save immediately prior to Woodworth's goal.

Widener hosts Alvernia on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
