Widener used an early second-half run to notch its fifth straight victory, 91-63 over Albright in the Commonwealth Conference opener for both schools at Schwartz Center.
Senior Charles Jones (Philadelphia, PA) scored five points during an 11-2 spurt that gave Widener a 67-51 lead with 12:14 remaining. Sophomore Chris McDevitt (Doylestown, PA) capped the run with a 3-pointer.
Widener (10-3, 1-0 CC) also put on the defensive clamps in the second half, holding Albright to a mere 29 percent (8-of-28) shooting and 3-of-9 from 3-point range. The Lions (9-5, 0-1) connected on just 40 percent (23-of-57) overall.
Junior Bobby Edmunds (Linwood, NJ) poured in 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting over 29 minutes for Widener, which shot 58 percent (37-of-64) from the floor. Jones netted 13 points, senior Matt Sosna (Stratford, NJ) scored 12, freshman Jack Brennan (Stratford, NJ) posted nine and 13 rebounds with junior Jamarr Johnson (Pittsgrove, NJ) recording nine and six.
Zac Shaeffer netted 17 points, Phil Hall scored 13 and Matt Bazsika had 10 for the Lions.
Widener hits the road Sunday to visit Lycoming as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. The women's game starts at 1:00 pm, followed by the men's contest at 3:00 pm.
