Field Hockey Rallies Before Suffering 3-2 Overtime Loss at Cabrini

(boxscore)

Junior Jessica Gonzalez (Eastampton, NJ) scored twice to help Widener rally from two goals down before the squad was handed a tough 3-2 overtime loss at Cabrini in Radnor, PA.

Lauren Alessi and Lynda Kaufmann each scored in the game's first 11 minutes as the Cavaliers (3-1) raced to a 2-0 lead.

The Pride (1-2) began their comeback in the 24th minute when Gonzalez tipped a pass from sophomore Megan Scarpianto (Sewell, NJ) into the cage for a 2-1 contest.  Gonzalez evened the contest 67 seconds into the second half, tallying on a fast break.

Widener had several chances late in regulation and would have prevailed if not for a phenomenal defensive save by Cabrini's Kate Ryan off a shot in close.

The comeback went for naught as the Cavaliers grabbed the momentum early in overtime and scored 92 seconds in.  Alessi took the ball on the right side and tallied just inside the left post.

Gonzalez took four shots and sophomore Megan Purcell (Perkasie, PA) made four saves for the Pride.

Caitlin Donahue ended with seven saves for Cabrini, which posted a 14-13 shots edge.

Widener on Wednesday hosts Haverford at 7:00 pm.
