Senior Doug Gabel (Feasterville, PA) scored an insurance goal with 22 minutes left that proved to be the decider for Widener in a 3-2 victory over DeSales at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
Sophomore Brian James (Perkasie, PA) got a pass from freshman Gareth Cooper (Royersford, PA) on the left side and deeked the defender. James found a wide-open Gabel, who fired a low shot from 10 yards for his second goal of the year and a 3-1 Widener lead.
That was Widener's only shot in the second half versus 13 for DeSales (4-5). The Bulldogs made things interesting with 15:40 remaining as Marc Leonard scored on a 15-yard shot over the goalkeeper, but the visitors would get no closer.
Senior Bill James (Perkasie, PA) tallied on a penalty kick in the fifth minute after freshman Bahae Boutayeb (Philadelphia, PA) was taken down in the box, giving Widener a 1-0 lead. The margin grew to 2-0 in the 22nd minute as Brian James got a pass from sophomore Justin Hovaker (Pasadena, MD) and fired home his second goal of the year.
Derek Long netted his sixth goal of the year in the 57th minute for the Bulldogs, who notched a 19-7 shots margin. Long and German Reyes had six shots apiece.
Brian James had three shots and junior Hamed Correa (Cali, Colombia) made seven saves for the Pride (3-4-2).
Widener hits the road next Wednesday to visit Cabrini at 6:30 pm.
