Field Hockey Falls in Last Minute, 3-2 to Delaware Valley

(boxscore)

Widener gave up Michelle Cernobyl's third goal of the game with 35 seconds left in a tough 3-2 loss to Delaware Valley at Edith R. Dixon Field.

The Pride held a 2-1 cushion in the 50th minute when freshman Natalie Gifford (Morton, PA) netted her second goal of the game and third of the year.  Junior Jessica Gonzalez (Eastampton, NJ) added the assist.

But Cernobyl evened the contest in the 56th minute off a feed from Marissa Di Miero.  Cernobyl completed the hat trick off a pass from Danielle Heyne to give the Aggies (4-1) their first lead of the game.

The goal was Cernobyl's team-leading 12th of the year.

Cernobyl had five shots, helping Del. Val. own a 14-5 edge, and Jackie Deschenes notched three saves.  Bethany Pavlik assisted on the first goal.

Gifford ended with four shots, sophomore Megan Purcell (Perkasie, PA) made 11 saves and freshman Colleen Cormier (Westampton, NJ) recorded an assist.

Widener on Tuesday hits the road to face Alvernia in Reading, PA.  Game time is 4:00 pm.
