Widener opened its 2008 season by splitting two matches at the ASICS Invitational in Baltimore, MD.
The Pride notched a 3-1 victory (19-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-14) over DeSales before a 3-1 loss (18-25, 25-21, 18-25, 12-25) to homestanding Johns Hopkins.
Against DeSales, junior Danielle Wetling (Upper Darby, PA) notched 11 kills and just two errors over 27 attacks for a .333 hitting percentage. Junior Devan Green (Monroe Center, IL) recorded eight kills and just one error over 16 attempts for a solid .438 percentage.
Junior Julieanne Gryn (Springfield, PA) had 19 digs, senior Ashley Varallo (Havertown, PA) recorded 10 and freshman Jamie Ballew (Media, PA) totaled 36 assists.
In the second match, Varallo closed with 23 digs, Gryn compiled 17 and Ballew notched 21 assists.
Green continued her solid hitting with nine kills and no errors over 18 attacks for a .500 percentage. Wetling and senior Meghan Fitzsimmons (Lancaster, NY) had five kills apiece.
Widener concludes its play in the tournament Saturday, facing Goucher at 10:00 am and Geneva at 12:00 pm.
