Senior Doug Gabel (Feasterville, PA) scored twice, including the decider in the 74th minute as Widener clinched a spot in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Lycoming at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
With the score level at 1-1, senior Bill James (Perkasie, PA) fired a shot that was saved by goalkeeper David Bald. Gabel was there for the rebound and buried it for his fourth goal of the season for Widener (8-7-3, 3-3 CC).
Gabel scored five minutes into the second half to give the Pride a 1-0 lead off an assist from freshman Dan Lorenzet (Forest Hill, MD). Tom McVey brought the Warriors (12-5-1, 4-2) to a tie with his fourth goal of the season, thanks to a feed from Mike Coates.
Junior Hamed Correa (Cali, Colombia) made five saves for the Pride, who overcame a 15-11 shots discrepancy. Gabel had five shots.
Widener is in the conference tournament for the third time in five years and will be the No. 4 seed. It will visit top-seeded Lebanon Valley in the semifinals Tuesday afternoon in Annville, PA.
