(boxscore)

Freshman Natalie Gifford (Morton, PA) and sophomore Mellany Broomall (Clarksboro, NJ) each scored twice for Widener, which notched its fifth win in seven outings with a 6-2 victory over Gwynedd-Mercy at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Junior Jessica Gonzalez (Eastampton, NJ) and Gifford scored in the first nine minutes to give Widener a 2-0 lead.  Kayla Farrow tallied for the Griffins to make it 2-1 in the 15th minute, but Gifford responded eight minutes later with her seventh goal of the season to restore the two-goal margin.

Victoria Geppert netted her sixth of the year in the 28th minute for Gwynedd-Mercy (6-9) to make it 3-2.  Sophomore Shannon Fien (Millville, NJ) tallied her fourth goal of the season in the 50th minute for the Pride (6-7) before Broomall scored her first two goals of the year.

Sophomore Megan Purcell (Perkasie, PA) made 11 saves for the Pride.  Freshman Colleen Cormier (Westampton, NJ) had two assists with Fien and junior Ellen Etzweiler (Landisville, PA) getting one each.

Ashley McGinty stopped two shots with Elizabeth Walton (Havertown, PA) and Casey Dellostretto notching an assist apiece.

The game was held on “Breast Cancer Awareness Night” as the team collected donations to help fight the disease.  The field hockey squad is one of seven for Widener to raise cancer awareness during one of its games, joining men's basketball, women's basketball, women's soccer, volleyball, softball and women's lacrosse.

Widener hits the road Saturday to visit No. 13 Elizabethtown, beginning at 1:00 pm.
