Widener rolled to a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-20, 25-18) over Gwynedd-Mercy before rallying from two sets down for a thrilling 3-2 triumph (25-27, 20-25, 25-22, 25-16, 19-17) over DeSales at Schwartz Center.
Against Gwynedd-Mercy, junior Devan Green (Monroe Center, IL) had 12 kills and freshman Jamie Ballew (Media, PA) totaled 25 assists. Senior Ashley Varallo (Havertown, PA) notched 15 digs, Julieanne Gryn (Springfield, PA) posted 13 and fellow junior Duong Lau (Upper Darby, PA) contributed 10.
The Pride showed their mettle against a red-hot Bulldog squad. Green was on a tear with a career-best 23 kills and only four errors over 56 attacks for a .339 hitting percentage. Ballew notched a season-best 49 assists and added 14 digs.
Gryn, the Commonwealth Conference leader in digs the last two years, had 30 with Varallo recording 19. Freshman Rachel Lambert (Glenmore, PA) notched 16 kills, Lau ended with 16 digs and junior Danielle Wetling (Upper Darby, PA) had 11.
Widener moved to 4-0 in five-set matches spanning the last two years
It is the second victory this season for the Pride against each school. Widener (19-6) is just two victories shy of equaling the school record for most in one season, set in 1991 (21-11).
The Pride today celebrated “Breast Cancer Awareness Day,” collecting donations to help fight the disease and the worthy cause.
Widener on Wednesday visits Elizabethtown for a crucial league match, beginning at 7:00 pm.
