Men's Soccer Remains Unscored Upon With 5-0 Victory Over Philadelphia Biblical

(boxscore)

9/5/07 -- Widener scored three first-half goals and its stingy defense once again pitched a shutout in a 5-0 victory over Philadelphia Biblical at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Sophomore Justin McCall (Brookhaven, PA) scored his third goal of the season in the 14th minute for a 1-0 Pride lead. He took a cross from senior Frank Nolan (Hatboro, PA) and buried a short shot inside the left post.

Senior Chad Dye (Bel Air, MD) scored his first of the year on a penalty kick in the 38th minute for a 2-0 margin. Junior Bill James (Perkasie, PA) drew the kick when his shot was blocked by a hand ball in the box.

Sophomore Max Bernhard (Coopersburg, PA) found the back of the net two minutes later for a 3-0 edge. His initial shot was stopped by goalkeeper Andy Ecker, but Bernhard buried the rebound for his first marker of the season.

Freshman Eric Chrencik (Finksburg, MD) and sophomore Kyle Brucker (Perkasie, PA) scored in the second half for Widener (3-0), which owned a comfortable 20-4 shots edge. James ended with two assists.

Sophomore Marty Squicciarini (Lansdale, PA), the reigning Commonwealth Conference Goalkeeper/Defender of the Week, needed just one save for the win. He has played 241 of the Pride's 271 minutes this year, helping his team to a 12-0 scoring edge.

James closed with five shots and Bernhard tallied four for Widener, which remains on its best start since the 2003 squad began 6-0.

Ecker had four saves for the Crimson Eagles (1-1-1).

Widener hits the road Saturday to face Scranton, beginning at 2:00 pm.
