Vince Touey in the Media

It is hard to put into words what Vince Touey has accomplished in 31 years at Widener, which includes 26 years coaching both the men’s and women’s programs as well as the last five just with the men’s squads. He has taken a near last-place finisher in the Middle Atlantic Conference and turned it into one which consistently is among the front runners in the conference each season.

Under Touey’s watch, Widener has won 28 track & field championships between the men and women and four cross country titles. He has coached numerous individual Middle Atlantic Conference champions and has produced 58 All-Americans, including a six-time national champion in Macharia Yuot and 16 of Widener’s 57 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.

Most recently, Touey led the Pride to Middle Atlantic Conference championships in all three men’s team events (cross country, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field) and the conference’s “triple crown” for the third straight season. He was also named the league’s coach of the year every season as well as the USTFCCCA Mideast Region Coach of the Year. In addition, he produced eight All-Americans over three seasons and Thomas Zamorski was named a CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team selection as well as the Middle Atlantic Conference Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year in men’s indoor and outdoor track & field.

After guiding the men’s outdoor track and field team to the 1999 conference title for the first time in his career, Touey was named the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. He again was selected region Coach of the Year after the team won its fourth straight Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Track and Field title and fifth in six years. Widener then won another MAC championship in 2006, capturing the men’s outdoor title and seeing Touey earn the league’s coach of the year award.

The 2010 campaign witnessed the start of something really special as the Pride won the MAC indoor and outdoor championships. The squads repeated the double in 2012 and 2013, and won the indoor crown in 2011. For all of those championships, Touey was named the MAC Coach of the Year. In 2013, he was tabbed USTFCCCA Mideast Region Coach of the Year for the first of back-to-back years.

All in all, the Pride have won a total of 31 Middle Atlantic Conference championships under Touey’s tutelage. This includes 16 men’s indoor titles, 13 men’s outdoor crowns, four first-place finishes in men’s cross country and one women’s indoor championship.

Touey previously taught at Saint James High School, coaching the cross country and track & field teams. The outdoor track & field squad placed first at the Delaware County Championships in 1983 and his freshmen cross country team won the 1986 Catholic League Championship. For all of the efforts at his alma mater, Touey was inducted into the school’s Wall of Honor in 2013 as well as the Delaware County Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.

A standout runner himself, Touey was most notably a member of La Salle College’s 4x800-meter relay team which held a school record for nine years. He also won the Penn Relays Marathon in 1983.

Touey earned his bachelor’s degree in labor relations from La Salle University in 1980 as well as a master’s in education from Widener in 1996. He enjoys cycling and rowing in his free time.
